Includes dry or brittle hair, frizz, breakage, and coats that mat easily

Dry, brittle, or frizzy coat

The skin may look healthy even when the hair shaft is damaged. The coat may snap during handling, mat again soon after brushing, or refuse to lie smoothly after drying.

Signs to look for

  • Hair breaks instead of flexing when handled gently
  • Mats return within a few days of brushing
  • The coat looks frizzy or lifts away from the body
  • Long-coat ends look pale, split, or uneven

Possible contributing factors

  • Overwashing or using products that are too harsh for the coat type
  • Heat damage from drying at too high a temperature or holding the dryer too close
  • Brushing a dry coat without preparing it first
  • A recent period of poor nutrition, illness, or stress

When to contact your veterinarian

  • Brittle hair comes with hair loss or skin changes
  • The coat texture changed suddenly
  • Your pet is also losing weight or overall body condition
  • You see no improvement after two complete recovery cycles

Before and after: damaged coat

Charlie, Pomeranian, 5. The coat broke during handling and began matting again within days of brushing.

8 weeks · Two cycles
Before
Day 0. Hair broke instead of flexing, frizz lifted away from the body, and mats returned within days.
After
Week 8. The coat retained more length, lay flatter after drying, and did not remat between grooming sessions.
The complete routine used

Dryer temperature was lowered, and the coat was brushed only after being prepared with detangling spray. The dog was bathed every 3 weeks with 5-in-1 Moisturizing Shampoo, treated with a conditioning mask once a week for two 4-week cycles, and maintained with Derma Care Leave-In Conditioner 3 times per week.

Photos and observations were provided by the pet's owner. Images were taken from a similar angle and in similar lighting; dates are on file. Results vary by pet and reflect the complete routine, not a single product. This information is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
